My story

I never decided to become a writer: I just always wrote.

I was a huge reader as a kid: magic faraway trees, the dark is rising, one ring to rule them all. We didn't have TV and the internet didn’t exist: I was addicted to being swept away in an exciting adventure. I have visceral memories of this joy and my hunger in seeking it out.

In my 20s, I pursued film-making and screenwriting while gallivanting around Sydney’s underground art scene. My most fun job was the editor of a weekly music magazine, where I also started a fake band that became a real band. I made zines, wrote for various publications, and published my first YA. I spent all my money on traveling (Europe, Central America, South East Asia) and making pretty bad short films. Got up to a lot of mischief, constantly embroiled in romantic drama, always desperately in love with the wrong person.

At 29, I moved to New York City and fell headfirst into the improv scene. I’ve always loved comedy and funny people, and hold the self-determined honor of being the first Australian on a UCB house team. I refined my dream of being a filmmaker into a novelist after realizing it would scratch my itch for the need to tell stories, and it was cheaper. I wrote one book that didn’t sell, then one that did. I would still like to write for screen, and am always up for mischief of any kind. I’m finally starting to suspect that my talent is catching up to my taste; it’s a good feeling.
